NEW ORLEANS - New Orleans is often referred to as the "Big Easy", but it was anything but that for the University of North Florida baseball team at the plate on Friday, as the Ospreys struck out 15 times en route to a 5-1 loss at the hands of 22nd-ranked Tulane at Zephyr Field.
UNF (0-5) compiled seven hits and left seven on base. Senior LHP Brad Johnson (0-2) allowed all of the runs and 11 hits in 6.1 innings of work while striking out five and throwing 115 pitches. It was the fourth game this season in which the Ospreys have scored only one run.
Johnson was able to hold the Green Wave (2-2) to only two runs through the first four innings when the UNF began to show signs of life. In the top of the fifth inning, senior right fielder Jon Dandridge got it going with a one-out single. He then put himself in scoring position after a wild pitch helped him take second base.
Senior second baseman Chad Knight, who started the season 1-for-7, closed the deal with a single up the middle that drove in Dandridge to cut the Green Wave lead to 2-1. But the Ospreys weren't able to keep the momentum going, failing to advance a runner past second in the final four innings.
Tulane padded its lead by scoring runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. A home run by the Green Wave's Warren McFadden in the seventh knocked Johnson out of the game.
Sophomore RHP Antonio Franzese threw 1.2 innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out one. Knight finished 2-for-3 with one RBI, while junior designated hitter Travis Martin went 2-for-4.
The Ospreys will continue its three-game set with Tulane at 3 p.m. tomorrow. Live stats are available free of charge on UNFOspreys.com.
