JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 15, 2007) - The
University of North Florida women's basketball team
turned the ball over 31 times in relinquishing a 13-
point second half lead on Thursday night, falling to
Kennesaw State 58-56.
Kennesaw State (11-13, 7-7 A-Sun) closed the game
on a 25-10 run over the last nine minutes of play,
capping the run when Gia Lockett hit a shot with three
seconds to play to break a 56-56 tie.
The loss was the fourth in a row for UNF (6-18, 5-8 A-
Sun).
"We took a calculated risk on the last play and
switched to a zone defense," UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer said. "She just hit a good shot. I thought
we got a little bit tentative in the second half and didn't
do a good job with our post defense."
Kennesaw post players Stephanie Searce and
Rosetta Hollis combined for 26 points. Searce
finished the game with a double-double, scoring 14
points to go along with 15 rebounds.
Shandrea Moore led UNF with 12 points and tied a
career high with eight rebounds. She finished the
night with the type of double-double she would rather
forget, combining her 12 points with 10 turnovers.
Cecilia Woolfolk and Denisia Andrews each scored
nine points to follow Moore in UNF's scoring column.
KSU began its rally after a pair of Jennifer Baker 3-
pointers that made it a 46-39 contest. The Lady Owls
tied the game on a Searce jumper before baker stole
the ball on an inbound play and went coast-to-coast
for a layup and a two point KSU advantage.
Kennesaw extended its lead to four before Moore hit a
pair of free throws and Shennette Sheffield banked
home a turnaround jumper to tie the game at 56 with
13 seconds to play.
Lockett set up her game winner from there, hitting a
shot from the right wing with the clock winding down.
She was the third Lady Owl in double figures, finishing
the game with 10 points.
UNF's defense kept it in the contest in the early going
until its offense was able to catch up. The teams
played to an 11-5 stalemate over the first 11:15 before
the offenses started to pick up.
Jaclyn Taricska came off the bench to help spark a 14-
9 UNF run that closed the opening half of play.
Taricska squeezed a 3-pointer between a 3-point play
by Moore and an Andrews 3-pointer that gave the Lady
Ospreys their first lead of the contest.
UNF led 29-20 at the break and eventually extended
that to 13 on a Moore layup with 18:01 to play in the
second half.
The Lady Ospreys outrebounded Kennesaw 39-37
and stole the ball away from KSU six times, compared
to 16 Kennesaw State steals.
The road doesn't get any easier for UNF, which plays
host to East Tennessee State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
