JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Seniors Maegan Weisert and Claire Yonutas closed out their UNF careers with a double-double each and led the University of North Florida women's volleyball team in a strong battle against Jacksonville on Thursday at UNF Arena in the SunTrust River City Rumble.
UNF (4-26) was able to fight back and win game three after falling behind 2-0 but could not keep the momentum going and fell 3-1 (17-30, 17-30, 30-26, 24-30) in its last match of the season. Yonutas had a match-high 13 kills and 10 digs, while Weisert recorded 12 kills and 10 digs. It was the fifth time this season the duo had both recorded a double-double. Freshman Madeline Belvin tallied 35 assists.
After hitting just -.051 in game one and .079 in the second game, the Ospreys found their spots in the third game, hitting .244. Junior Bary Rasmussen led UNF in the game with five kills. After the score stood at six apiece, UNF grabbed the reins and went on a 14-4 run to take a 20-10 lead.
After JU came back to cut the score to 26-22, UNF clamped down and forced errant attacks by the Dolphins. The Ospreys sealed the game three win on an attack error by JU's Abby Gruenbacher.
Game four was a back-and-forth affair in the early going. Rasmussen tied it at five on a kill, but JU went on to a 10-7 lead. Pulled to within 11-10, but the Dolphins didn't let up and went on a 9-1 run to take a 20-11 lead.
The Ospreys continued to show determination and outscored the Dolphins 9-6 to cut it to 26-20 on a kill from freshman Kaley Read. Read was able to bring the Ospreys closer on an ace, cutting the JU lead to 27-23, but the Dolphins pulled it together and went on a 3-1 run to seal the match.
Rasmussen finished with 10 kills, while Read tallied six kills and a season-high six blocks. Freshman Marshay Greenlee also had a season-high five blocks to go along with four kills. Weisert's double-double was the 41st of the career.
At the match's intermission, the Ospreys welcomed back program greats Emily Kohler and Valerie Martinez, who were honored as part of the volleyball program's 25th-Anniversary Celebration.
