UNF continues road success
Final Stats
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The University of North Florida women's soccer team continued its conference road unbeaten streak on Thursday night as they defeated the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs 2-1.
UNF (5-9-1, 4-3 A-Sun) received a key performance from goalkeeper Rachael Howard who ended the game with nine saves, while the Gardner-Webb (5-9, 3-4 A-Sun) keeper ended with four.
Freshman Tiffany Wiggen recorded UNF's only shot in the first half, after collecting the ball at the top of the 18-yard box, but was unable to get much power behind the shot. UNF battled strong in the first half, despite the one shot, keeping Gardner-Webb on its end of the field for the majority of the half.
The Lady Ospreys came out blazing in the second half getting an early goal from freshman Alejandra Castanos. The goal came in the 46th minute after senior Lisa Taylor poked the ball past the Gardner-Webb defense, allowing Castanos to blast it past the keeper.
Gardner-Webb came close to getting the equalizer in the 63rd minute unleashing several shots at Howard, after playing the ball into the box off a corner kick. Despite its best attempts Howard proved to be to strong for Gardner-Webb, stopping every shot that came her way.
"I happy with the way we came out in the second half, we would have liked to have kept them off the board," Head coach Linda Hamilton said. "We battled strong and were able to come away with a key victory."
Wiggen almost put UNF up 2-0 in the 68th minute after beating the Gardner-Webb back line, forcing its goalkeeper to make a save. Wiggen was able to get a goal in the 73rd minute after being credited with a goal that bounced off several bodies in the box before finding the back netting.
Gardner-Webb managed to get one goal back in the 89th minute, but it was not enough.
The Lady Ospreys return to action on Saturday when they face Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C. The game is set for 3 p.m.
