JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's soccer team (4-9-1, 3-3 A-Sun) fell 1-0 to Atlantic Sun Conference newcomer Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday afternoon.
UNF outshot Florida Gulf Coast 16-14, while also having the advantaged in shots on goal 5-4. Goalkeeper Rachael Howard made three saves in the game, while Kirsi Keenan made five for the Eagles (8-5, 4-2 A-Sun).
The teams heading into the locker tied 0-0 at the half with neither team having a distinct advantage over the other. Katelin Swift and Elizabeth Gowan led the way for UNF in the first half, each recording two shots each.
Florida Gulf Coast took a 1-0 lead just minutes into the second half after earning a penalty kick. The penalty kick was called in the 56th minute after a Florida Gulf Coast player went down inside the far corner of the 18-yard box. Amber McCall took the kick for Florida Gulf Coast.
UNF continued to battle hard for the remainder of the second half, stringing together several shots in the final 15 minutes of the game. Despite their best attempts the Lady Ospreys were unable to find the equalizer.
The Lady Ospreys return to the road next week, as they take on Gardner-Webb on Oct. 18 and Campbell on Oct. 20.
