SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The
University of North Florida golf team cruised through
its opening nine at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic
on Monday before running into trouble just after the
turn. Despite a little hiccup, UNF remained in fifth
place heading into Tuesday's final round.
UNF shot 286 as a team, improving eight strokes over
Sunday's opening round. The Ospreys were 6-over-
par for the day and are +20 for the tournament, only
seven strokes behind second place Baylor.
"We looked good today with the exception of holes 10,
11 and 12," UNF head coach Scott Schroeder
said. "We didn't gain ground on anyone, but we didn't
lose ground either. We'll go out tomorrow and try to
put together a good round."
Chris Kennedy helped lead the Ospreys with a 1-over-
par 71 on Monday and is tied for eighth heading into
Tuesday's round. Kennedy enjoyed a fairly uneventful
day with a bogey and a birdie on the front nine to go
along with a double bogey and a birdie on the back.
J.C. Horne got off to a hot start with birdies on his first
three holes and four of his first five. Horne had five
birdies in all on the front nine but started the back nine
with a pair of bogeys and a double bogey.
As a team the Ospreys played holes 10-12 at 11-over-
par. The team was 5-under-par the rest of the round.
Jeff Dennis fell out of his perch among the top 10,
slipping to 22nd after a round of 75. Michael O'Neal
finished strong with a pair of birdies on the back nine
to shoot even par for the day, while Major Forbess
carded a 78.
O'Neal trails Kennedy by one in the individual
standings and is tied for 15th overall. They will both be
chasing Michigan State's Ryan Brehm, who is 4-
under-par for the tournament after shooting 64 on
Monday. Kennedy trails Brehm by seven strokes.
Michigan State leads the team competition by 14
strokes over Baylor. The Spartans have a two-round
total of 559. Baylor (573), Arkansas (577) and Lamar
(578) will all be in the final day hunt along with the
Ospreys (580).
