boards in win at UNF

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Jan. 6, 2007) - The
University of North Florida women's basketball team
was outrebounded by Gardner-Webb 50-26 on
Saturday, leading to a 39-35 Gardner-Webb victory
in a low-scoring affair at UNF Arena.
Gardner-Webb owned the boards on both sides of
the court, pulling down 24 offensive rebounds, two
boards less than UNF's total on both ends.
Tamara Hubbard was the only Lady Osprey in double
figures, scoring 16 points for the second game in a
row, while hitting 3-of-5 shots beyond the 3-point
arc.
Candyse Kelly led a balanced scoring effort for the
Runnin' Bulldogs, leading her team with 10 points.
Both Shameka Smith (14) and Brittany Harmon (12)
finished the game with double-digit rebounds to lead
all players.
After trailing most of the first half, Gardner-Webb (4-
10, 1-2 A-Sun) turned the tables on the Lady
Ospreys (3-10, 2-2 A-Sun) in the second half taking
a 21-16 lead on back-to-back 3-pointers by Jenny
Sprouse. UNF fought back with a Hubbard 3-pointer
and a Jennifer Bowen jumper. Gardner-Webb
answered with five-straight points before Shennette Sheffield hit a pair of layups to make it a 26-25
contest.
Sheffield finished the game with four points and a
team high five rebounds.
Both teams went through long scoring droughts in
the second half before Gardner-Webb capped off an
8-2 run in the final minute of play to seal the win.
UNF kept itself in the contest with 12 steals, and
forced the Runnin' Bulldogs into 23 turnovers. The
Lady Ospreys turned the ball over 17 times.
The day started out on a positive note for UNF,
which came out of the gates with a 10-4 advantage.
Gardner-Webb took a 13-12 lead on a Latoya Carter
layup at the 8:45 mark of the half and neither team
scored again until Brittany Harmon hit a jumper with
2:53 to play. Gardner-Webb led 15-14 at the half
and trailed for only a little more than a minute in the
second half.
UNF was 3-for-11 beyond the 3-point arc for the
game, while Gardner-Webb hit 6-of-27 shots from
long range.
The Lady Ospreys are back in action on Wednesday
when they finish up their four-game homestand
against Bethune-Cookman at 7 p.m.
