JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Jan. 10, 2007) - The
University of North Florida women's basketball team
got a career night from senior Denisia Andrews but it
wasn't enough in a 58-42 loss to Bethune-Cookman
at UNF Arena.
Andrews finished the game with career highs in
points (12) and steals (6), leading the Lady Ospreys
(3-11) in scoring after hitting 5-of-9 shots from the
field.
Bethune-Cookman (4-9) countered with a pair of
players in double figures, as Tristan McCray and
Sierra McKnight each scored 15 points to help the
Wildcats overcome a 10-point first half deficit. The
win was the first on the road this season for BCC.
Things off to a good start for UNF, which came out
of the gates firing. A new starting lineup that
featured four guards had the Lady Ospreys out to a
9-0 lead, then a 12-2 advantage after Andrews
drained a 3-pointer at the 17:04 mark of the first
half.
Bethune-Cookman began to claw its way back into
the contest from there, eventually taking a 20-19
advantage on a Monique Bassett free throw at the
4:17 mark. The two teams traded points from there,
going into the locker room tied after Cecilia Woolfolk
hit a free throw in the final second of play.
Jennifer Bowen and Andrews each had seven points
in the half to lead UNF, while McCray finished the half
with nine points.
BCC began to take control early in the second half
after the Lady Ospreys did not hit a shot from the
field until the 13:11 mark of the half. That basket - a
Bowen jumper - made it a 33-27 game, and would be
as close as UNF would get.
Bethune-Cookman led by as many as 18 before
Bowen scored in the final seconds of play to make it
a 16-point contest.
The win gave the Wildcats a season sweep over
UNF.
Bethune-Cookman won the battle of the boards 43-
30, with Natasha Ferguson leading all players with
eight rebounds. Bowen led the Lady Ospreys, pulling
down six rebounds to go along with her 11 points.
UNF turned the ball over 23 times compared to 25 for
Bethune-Cookman. UNF came away with 18 steals,
but did not have a blocked shot.
The Lady Ospreys will return to the court on
Saturday when they travel across town to take on
Jacksonville in a SunTrust River City Rumble matchup.
