EL PASO, Texas - The University of North Florida women's tennis team battled bad weather most of the afternoon but finally hit the courts late in the day and upended Lamar 4-2 in a match that was shortened to singles-only play.
UNF (2-0) got a hard-fought victory at No. 1 singles from Natalia Sanchez, who upended Lamar's Kaltrina Harbouri 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5). Sanchez's win in her first career match at UNF clinched the victory for the Ospreys.
UNF's Vanessa Sanchez upended Tanya Roberts, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 2 position, while UNF's Florencia Torres won 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 3 position over Maria Gutierrez. Catalina Castillo also won for the Lady Ospreys, knocking off Pamela Martinez, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 4 singles.
"The girls were able to keep their focus going into the first away match of the season," UNF head coach Igal Buberman said. "It snowed in the morning, and the weather was pretty cold, so we took a long warm-up. Preparation will be a key for the rest of the weekend in El Paso. The elevation and weather make the ball run faster than in Florida. The girls played well together as a team, though, and fought until the end. It will be a tough weekend, and our goal is to finish undefeated."
The Lady Ospreys will face Texas-Pan American at 11 a.m. Eastern Time on Saturday and then play UTEP on Sunday at 11 a.m. - both in El Paso.
