JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The
University of North Florida women's basketball team
had an answer for everything Stetson threw at it in a
75-61 victory at UNF Arena.
UNF (5-14, 4-5A-Sun) carried an 11-point lead into
the half and built that into a 16-point margin before
turning away a pair of second-half runs by the Lady
Hatters (4-16, 4-5 A-Sun). Stetson pulled within five
at the 4:15 mark, but would get no closer. UNF
finally slammed the door shut with a 15-4 run to
close the game and built its first winning streak of
the season in the process.
More often than not, senior Tamara Hubbard and
sophomore Jennifer Bowen were the tandem that
halted Stetson's comeback bid. Bowen finished the
game with a career high 19 points, while Hubbard
scored 21, hitting 3-of-4 shots beyond the 3-point
line.
"Jennifer Bowen and Tamara hit some big shots for
us," UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer said. "I think
the team is finally starting to turn the corner. It
started last week at Kennesaw State. You can see
them gaining confidence."
Saturday's 75 points was the best offensive output
by the team this season. Cecilia Woolfolk was the
third Lady Osprey in double digits, finishing the game
with 13 points.
UNF performed on the defensive end as well, finishing
the game with 16 steals. Jennifer Guldager led that
effort with a career high seven steals, while
Shandrea Moore had six, which was also a career
high.
"It was a team effort today," Bowen said. "Everyone
contributed in some way on both ends of the floor."
Trailing 46-30 early in the second half, Stetson
mounted a 15-5 run that Stacia Shepherd capped off
with a 3-pointer. Hubbard answered that with a 3-
pointer, as she and Bowen accounted for all 16 of
UNF's points from the 12:29 mark until Guldager
finally broke that string with a free throw at the 3:56
mark.
Bowen and Hubbard helped UNF rebuild its lead to 10
before Stetson chopped that in half on an Ayesha
Barkley layup and a Kellie Olson 3-pointer. After
Guldager's free throw, Hubbard gave UNF a 66-57
advantage with a 3-pointer at the 3:02 mark.
Hubbard followed that with a jumper before UNF
sealed the win from the free throw line.
Janene Maclin led Stetson with 16 points, followed by
Sharnesha Smith who scored 15.
Stetson won the battle of the boards 34-32, but
turned the ball over 23 times compared to only 14 for
UNF. The Lady Ospreys converted those turnovers
into 26 points.
Maclin led all players with nine rebounds, while
Guldager had a team high eight for UNF.
Stetson had an early 4-0 advantage and held the
Lady Ospreys scoreless for the first 2:30 of the
game. UNF quickly picked up the offensive pace and
went on a 14-2 run that gave them a 28-13
advantage. Woolfolk helped cap that run with a pair
of free throws, scoring seven points in the opening
half, before scoring UNF's first six points of the
second half.
The Lady Ospreys are on the road for three straight
beginning next Thursday with a trip to Gardner-
Webb.
