JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida softball team got off to early leads and didn't look back in a doubleheader sweep of Belmont on Sunday at the UNF Softball Complex.
The Lady Ospreys won the opener 5-1 before taking the nightcap 6-0.
For the second outing in a row, UNF got dominant pitching from Tori Ahern and Katie Brosky, as they allowed only five hits and one run between them after giving up only one hit in back-to-back shutouts against Lipscomb on Friday.
"We picked up where we left off on Friday," UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "Our pitching has kept us in ballgames lately. The defense was phenomenal today, we made some great plays."
UNF scored three runs in the top of the first of game one without the benefit of a hit. The Lady Ospreys took advantage of three Belmont errors in the opening inning to go along with a walk and a hit batsman. Randalyn Rogers collected the only RBI of the inning, drawing a bases loaded walk that gave UNF a 2-0 lead. Caitlin Miller completed the scoring when Bruins catcher Jess McMillan didn't touch the plate on a throw from third baseman Kori Bowser.
Belmont scratched a run across in the third inning when Heather Grossnickle tripled home Angie Helseth. That was only one of three hits that Ahern gave up on the day and one of only four on the week.
Ahern (7-8) struck out seven and walked three in the complete-game win.
The Lady Ospreys gave her two more runs to work with in the fifth when Alisha Phillips singled through the left side of the infield to bring home Christina Evans. Kelli Rutenbar scored one batter later on a Gwen Williams groundout.
Evans and Phillips had the only hits off Bruins' starter Chelsea Rae Godwin (5-6).
The Lady Ospreys got on the board early in game two as well when Ashley Parenteau led off the bottom of the first inning with her team-leading sixth home run of the season. The Lady Ospreys added three more runs in the second, all of which were unearned. Gwen Williams and Lauren Pulling both singled for UNF, with Pulling, Jessica Sexton and Parenteau each coming around to score a run.
Parenteau finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs and an RBI.
Williams scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning to give UNF a 5-0 advantage before Jessica Sexton singled up the middle to drive home Ashley Shipman and complete the scoring.
Brosky (8-6) benefited from a pair of double plays by the UNF defense and struck out three, while walking one. Renae Beauchman was the only Bruin to reach second after she doubled with two outs in the second inning. Grossnickle collected Belmont's other hit in the fourth inning, but was erased on a double play.
Sammi Parks (6-5) suffered the loss for Belmont, as she lasted only two innings, while surrendering four hits and striking out three.
UNF heads back on the road next week when it travels to Florida A&M on Tuesday before getting back into conference play with road doubleheaders at Campbell and Gardner-Webb on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
