TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of North Florida softball team fell victim to the long ball as Florida A&M slugged three home runs in two games to sweep a doubleheader at Lady Rattlers Softball Complex in Tallahassee, Fla., on Tuesday.
FAMU (33-21) opened with a 3-1 win before winning the second game 10-2 in five innings.
Ashley Parenteau led the UNF (23-20) offense with a base hit in both games, while Gwen Williams had a hit and a run in game two.
UNF scratched the scoreboard in the opening inning of play after Parenteau led off the game with a single to left, advanced to second on a Christina Evans sacrifice bunt and scored when Caitlin Miller singled to center.
Kelli Pitts (7-5) worked her way out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the first, but couldn't keep the Rattlers off the board in the third, giving up a home run to Danielle Brown that gave FAMU a 2-1 advantage.
Brown (13-9) helped herself in the pitching circle as well, turning away a UNF rally in the top of the sixth by coaxing Miller into a pop-up with two runners on before striking out Williams to end the inning with runners on second and third.
Kelly Gordon added a Rattler run in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single that completed the scoring.
UNF opened the scoring in the second game when Williams led off the top of the second with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored when Alisha Phillips singled up the middle.
FAMU tied the game in the bottom of the second when Nekendra Jones scored on a Jessica Sexton wild pitch.
UNF took the lead back with a run in the top of the third courtesy of a Florida A&M error, but fell victim to the long ball again when Ashley James hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third to give the Lady Rattlers a 3-2 advantage. FAMU finally broke the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth, capped by an Alacia Strafford three run home run to right center.
Sexton (1-1) suffered the loss for UNF, while Tiffany Johnson (15-3) earned the win for the Lady Rattlers.
UNF continues its extended road trip this week, playing conference doubleheaders at Campbell and Gardner-Webb on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
