JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - University of North Florida pitchers Katie Brosky and Tori Ahern gave up one combined hit in two games to lead the Lady Ospreys to a doubleheader sweep of Lipscomb on Friday at the UNF Softball Complex.
UNF (21-18, 4-4 A-Sun) won the opener 2-0 before taking the second game 7-0.
Brosky threw her second no-hitter of the season in the nightcap, while Ahern only surrendered one hit in the opener.
The UNF offense did its part as well, muscling out seven hits in the doubleheader, while taking an aggressive charge to score runs in both games.
"We got excellent pitching and timely hitting today," UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "Every phase of our game came together."
Ahern (6-8) carried a no-hitter herself into the fifth inning of the opener, giving up only one hit in the complete-game win. Sarah Collins collected the only hit for Lipscomb, leading off the fifth with a single to right. Ahern allowed two walks in the win and struck out two. She has allowed only one run in her last 23 innings of work.
Alisha Phillips provided Ahern and the rest of the Lady Ospreys with all the offense it needed, driving home a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Phillips' single scored both Kelli Rutenbar and Caitlin Miller, who each moved into scoring position on a double steal.
Sara Meek (7-12) suffered the loss for the Lady Bisons (11-23, 2-6 A-Sun), surrendering only two hits and a walk while striking out three.
Phillips came through with an RBI in the second game on a sacrifice fly to right that gave UNF a 6-0 lead after the first two innings of play.
UNF jumped all over Lady Bisons' starter Allison Tyree with four runs in the opening inning on the benefit of only one hit. The Lady Ospreys took advantage of a pair of Lipscomb errors and scored the only run they would eventually need on a Rutenbar suicide squeeze. Ashley Parenteau helped set up that squeeze after leading off the game with a walk, then taking a pair of bases on a Christina Evans sacrifice bunt.
Lauren Pulling and Parenteau started UNF's rally in the second inning, each reaching on a walk before Rutenbar singled to make it a 5-0 UNF lead. Phillips' sacrifice fly brought home Parenteau for the second time.
It was Brosky's game from there, as she gave up only two walks and did not allow a runner to reach second. Brosky put her defense to work as well. Despite being UNF's leader in strikeouts, she did not have a strikeout on Friday.
"The defense played awesome behind me," Brosky said. "Early in the game we worked inside a lot then mixed the change-up and rise ball as the game went on. Kelli [Rutenbar] called a great game behind the plate."
UNF finally completed the scoring in the seventh when Christina Evans drove home Parenteau with an RBI double to right-center.
Rutenbar led the offensive attack in the second game with a 2-for-4 performance.
The Lady Ospreys return to action on Sunday when they host Belmont at 11 a.m.
