Tallahassee, Fla. -North Florida scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and added one more in the ninth to complete a 7-6 comeback victory over Florida A&M on Wednesday afternoon at Moore-Kittles Field.
UNF (20-17) had five hits and was aided by two FAMU errors in the eighth. Chad Knight singled to left field to send Jon Dandrige across the dish for the first run in the inning. Brennan Grogan scored on a wild pitch and Knight came around to score on error. Jonathan Hodach had an RBI single and Andy Warren lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Travis Martin to come home.
The Ospreys added an insurance run in the ninth as Grogan reached on an error and scored on another error by Rattlers' second baseman Corey McFadden. FAMU had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth with runners on second and third with two outs. Stanley Gnat singled through the left side that sent McFadden home from third, but Matt Oxendine fired a strike from left field to gun-down Edmond Bushnell at the plate and preserve the one-run victory. UNF is now 10-5 in games decided by one run.
The Rattlers jumped ahead of the Ospreys with four runs in the first inning. UNF starter Dicarlo Thompson issued four walks and was credited with four earned runs, before giving way to Jason Kracunas, who struck out two batters in en route to retiring the side.
FAMU added another run in the second off of Kracunas as Bushnell picked up an RBI single through the left side that allowed Kevin Clethan to score. The Rattlers were still threatening with runners on second and third with only one out, but Ryan Amason came in from the bullpen and recorded back-to-back strike outs to get out of the jam.
The Ospreys were threatening to get on the board in the fifth inning as Hodach and Josh Maxwell led off the frame with back-to-back singles, but Warren grounded into a double play and Andrew Chapman was retired on a groundout to shortstop to end the threat.
UNF plated its first run in the top of the seventh when Jimmy Glanville led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a RBI single by Maxwell. However, FAMU was able to limit the damage as Warren hit into his second straight double play to end the inning.
Travis Martin (1-1) worked 3.1 innings and struck out five hitters to earn the win. Jared Incinelli recorded the final two outs in the ninth to pickup his second save of the season.
Maxwell had a career-high 3-for-3 performance at the plate and Hodach went 3-for-4 at the dish to lead the Ospreys' offense.
UNF will be back in action on Friday night against New Mexico State. Game one of the three-game series will get underway at 8 p.m. est.
