CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of North Florida softball team split a pair of games on day two of the Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn., Saturday, defeating Middle Tennessee State 7-5 before falling to Indiana 3-2.
UNF is now 3-1 at the tournament, which wraps up on Sunday.
"We hit the ball well in our first game against Middle Tennessee State, then saw a little better pitching against Indiana," UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "I continue to be impressed by the fact that we are right there with all of our competition. It was a good day and I was pleased with our performance."
UNF battled another cold morning in its opening game of the day and extended its record to 3-0 at the Frost Classic with a 7-5 win against Middle Tennessee State.
The Lady Ospreys (11-5) broke open a 3-3 tie in the top of the fifth inning with three runs, then hung on from there.
Kelli Rutenbar and Alisha Phillips started the rally in the fifth with back-to-back doubles before Randalyn Rogers and Gwen Williams drove home runs to give UNF a 6-3 advantage.
UNF got on the board in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs on the strength of three hits and a walk. Christina Evans started the game with a double, before Alisha Phillips doubled to drive her home. Randalyn Rogers completed the scoring with a single that drove in Phillips and Kelli Rutenbar.
The Lady Osprey defense gave all three of those runs back in the bottom of the third thanks to three errors that led to all of Middle Tennessee State's runs.
UNF added a run in the sixth on a Caitlin Miller RBI single, while the Blue Raiders scored a pair on home runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Katie Brosky (4-2) earned the win for the Lady Ospreys, allowing five runs, two earned, and six hits, while striking out five.
Phillips led the UNF offense with three hits and a pair of runs to go along with an RBI. Rogers also had two hits for UNF.
The Lady Ospreys took an early 1-0 advantage against Indiana, but fell behind when the Hoosiers hit three home runs over the first two innings of play. Jennilee Huddleston and Lauren Hines hit back-to-back home in the bottom of the first inning before Rachel Terry led off the bottom of the second with a home run to stake IU to a 3-1 advantage.
Kelli Pitts (2-2) settled down from there and only allowed one hit the rest of the way. Her offense took a run back in the top of the sixth when Caitlin Miller singled and Rutenbar scored from second after IU center fielder Heather Hohs bobbled the base hit for her second error of the game.
That's all the Lady Ospreys could muster off of Megan Roark (2-3), who earned the complete-game win, striking out 11 and walking three.
Miller had three of UNF's four hits in the contest.
UNF will close out at action at the Frost Classic on Sunday when it takes on Tennessee Tech and host Tennessee-Chattanooga.
