CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of North Florida softball team closed out its final day of play at the Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn., with a pair of losses to Tennessee Tech and Tennessee-Chattanooga on Sunday.
After scoring 24 runs in its first four games of the tournament, the Lady Ospreys (11-7) scored only one run on Sunday in losing 6-1 to Tennessee Tech and 1-0 to the host Moccasins.
Despite the pair of losses, UNF finished the tournament 3-3.
"We proved this weekend that we can play with anybody," UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "It's just the little things here and there we have to improve upon."
Six of the seven runs that were given up by the UNF pitching staff came with two outs, including a walk off home run by UTC's Brittney Whittier that gave the Mocs a 1-0 win in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Tori Ahern (4-2) allowed the home run after pitching into the seventh inning, giving up five hits and striking out three.
UNF's offense left seven runners in scoring position and mustered five hits off of UTC's JayCee Wood (8-5). Amy Higgs led the UNF offensive attack with three hits.
Lady Osprey hurler Katie Brosky carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning against Tennessee Tech before the Golden Eagles finally broke it up. Brosky (4-3) was one pitch away from getting out of the fifth and sixth innings, but gave up a combined five runs with two outs in those innings to suffer the loss.
The Lady Ospreys had two runners thrown out at the plate before Ashley Parenteau scored a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth. UNF had eight hits overall in the game, two of which came off the bat of Gwen Williams.
UNF is now 7-7 in tournament play this season.
The Lady Ospreys will return home to begin a busy week on Tuesday with a doubleheader against N.C. State, followed by two games at Georgia Southern and a trip to Tallahassee for Florida State's tournament next weekend. Live audio coverage of the N.C. State doubleheader can be heard at www.unfospreys.com.
