JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The North Florida women's tennis team has become untouchable is recent weeks. The Lady Ospreys continued that trend on Wednesday against Northern Illinois with a 7-0 victory over the Lady Huskies at the UNF Tennis Complex.
The win was the seventh consecutive overall for the Lady Ospreys, who have not allowed their opponents a match victory in four consecutive outings. UNF has outscored its opposition 40-2 since Feb. 25 - including five shutouts during the six- match stretch.
"The girls played determined and did not let the allure of spring break hinder their performance," UNF assistant coach Julie Stoppelli said. "I'm excited about the way the team is playing, and I plan to see great performances all the way through to the end of the season."
The Lady Ospreys tooks advantage of a short-handed NIU squad in doubles, earning a quick 1- 0 lead after wins by Catalina Castillo and Florencia Torres at the No. 1 position (8-5) and a default at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, the teams played just five matches - the sixth was also defaulted - with UNF capturing all five in straight sets. Vanessa Sanchez (No. 1), Catalina Castillo (No. 2), Florencia Torres (No. 3), Katja Brandt (No. 4), Lauren Cockbill (No. 5) and Robin Rogers (No. 6) all improved their season singles marks with victories.
The Lady Ospreys will take two weeks off before returning to the court on April 1 at South Carolina State.
