CHARLESTON, S.C. (Feb. 25, 2006) - The University of North Florida softball team began Saturday competition at the Cougar Classic with a 4-0 loss to Akron, then lost it second game of the day to Mother Nature.
UNF (8-3) collected five hits and committed three errors in the opening game and fell behind 3-0 after the first two innings of play.
Akron (4-2) pitcher Judie Boyes kept the Lady Osprey offense off balance all day, not allowing UNF anything better than a single. UNF's biggest threat came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Alisha Phillips and Caitlin Miller led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Boyes didn't allow any further damage, retiring the next three hitters she faced.
Miller reached on a fielder's choice in her next at-bat and moved around to third on a Gwen Williams single. Boyes got herself out of the inning when she struck out Jessica Sexton, who came on as a pinch hitter for Lauren Pulling.
All but one of the Zips' starters had a base hit with Sarah Zilles, Cali Stratton and Lisa McLean all collecting two hits.
Williams led the Lady Ospreys with a 1-for-2 performance that included a walk.
Kelli Pitts (1-1) suffered the loss for the Lady Ospreys, giving up 10 hits and four runs, two of which were earned.
UNF and the College of Charleston made it through an inning of play before rain halted the game. A decision will be made on continuation of the game and Sunday's play as well when the weather picture becomes clearer.
