CHARLESTON, S.C. - The University of North Florida softball team dropped its final game of the Cougar Classic 4-2 to host College of Charleston on Saturday at Patriots Point in Charleston, S.C.
The Lady Cougars (5-5) scored three runs on a pair of home runs, while holding UNF (8-4) to single runs in the fourth and fifth innings of play.
The Lady Ospreys began the tournament with a 2-1 win against Marshall before dropping a pair of one-run games to Akron and Dayton.
The College of Charleston took a 3-1 lead Sunday on the strength of a two-run home run off the bat of Renee Francis in the bottom of the second inning and a solo home run to center by Jayme Durand that led off the bottom of the fourth.
UNF scored its first run of the game when Gwen Williams delivered an RBI single to right in the top of the fourth that scored Kelli Rutenbar.
Alisha Phillips came through with another two-out RBI in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Cougar lead to 3-2.
The Cougars, however, added one more run in the bottom of the fifth to seal the win.
All four Cougar runs were charged to Katie Brosky (3-2), who pitched 5.2 innings, allowing five hits while walking four and striking out six hitters.
Amber Havnar (3-1) earned the win for the Cougars, while Shannon Howard came on in the seventh to work the Cougars out of a jam and earn her first save of the season.
The top four hitters in UNF's lineup each had a hit for the Lady Ospreys, while Williams and Amy Higgs also had a hit.
UNF had a chance to get on the board in the top of the first inning when it loaded the bases with two outs. The Lady Ospreys failed to score in the inning, however. UNF also put the tying run in the top of the seventh, but couldn't score when Phillips lined into a double play, doubling Christina Evans off of first.
UNF is back in action next weekend when it heads to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the Frost Classic.
