CHARLESTON, S.C. - A pair of errors led to four unearned runs in UNF's second game of the Cougar Classic against Dayton on Friday, leading to a 7-6 Flyers win in Charleston, S.C.
Dayton (1-1) scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs, capitalizing on an error committed by Higgs.
The Lady Ospreys (8-2) countered with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth, as Kelli Rutenbar and Christina Evans strung together back-to-back doubles that sparked the rally. UNF added another run in the seventh when Miller tripled down the right field line, driving home Phillips who reached on a two-out error. Randalyn Rogers, however, popped out to short to end the rally with the tying run on third.
"We hit the ball well and hung with them offensively," UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "Defensively, we can't afford to not make those plays."
Katie Brosky (3-1) suffered the loss for the Lady Ospreys, lasting 3.2 innings, giving up seven runs - three earned - on seven hits to go along with three walks and five strikeouts.
UNF finished the contest with 11 hits. Miller, Evans, Ashley Parenteau and Gwen Wiliams each had a pair of hits, while Rogers drove home two runs.
UNF will take on Akron and the College of Charleston Saturday as play continues in the Cougar Classic.
