NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The University of North Florida women's basketball team dropped its Atlantic Sun opener to Belmont, falling to the defending A-Sun champs 76-48 at the Curb Event Center on Thursday.
Antoinette Reames set a career high point total for the second game in a row, scoring 14 points, while hitting 6-of-8 shots from the free throw line. Reames broke her previous high of 11, which she set against Villanova in the Lady Ospreys' last outing.
UNF put forth a strong effort early in the second half but could not recover from a hole it dug in the first few minutes of the contest..
The Lady Ospreys spread the offensive wealth around, with nine different players cracking the scoring column. Tamara Hubbard, Jennifer Bowen and Denisia Andrews each scored six points
Jessica Bobbitt tied Reames with a game high 14 points, and also collected nine rebounds to tie Bowen for the game high.
UNF fell behind 18-7 out of the gates, as Alysha Clark had six of the Belmont's first 18 points. The Bruins led by as many as 17 points in the half, holding that advantage most of the frame. Belmont upped that lead to 20 as it took advantage of 12 UNF turnovers. The Lady Ospreys knifed into that advantage in the closing minutes of the opening half and trailed 34-18 at the break.
Clark led all players with eight points in the half, while Denisia Andrews had four points for the Lady Ospreys and was one of eight UNF players with a point. UNF also battled back on the boards toward the end of the half, but trailed the rebounding battle 24-20.
UNF came out of the gates strong in the second half, outscoring Belmont 6-2, thanks in part to four points from the line by Jennifer Bowen and a Tamara Hubbard jumper. Belmont extended that lead back to 20 at the 11:45 mark after Laura Cowley nailed a 3-pointer from the left wing to give the Bruins a 48-28 advantage. Belmont, however, pulled away in the end to collect the victory and avenge a loss suffered to UNF at the end of last season.
UNF continues its two-game road swing through Nashville on Saturday when it travels across town to take on Lipscomb at 3 p.m. EST.
