MIAMI, Fla. - The University
of North Florida women's basketball team fell to 0-2
at the FIU Thanksgiving Classic, dropping the
tournament consolation game to Villanova on
Saturday 66-47 at Pharmed Arena, despite a strong
second-half performance.
Antoinette Reames scored a career high 11 points for
UNF (1-4) to go along with six rebounds and four
blocks. Jennifer Guldager followed her with a strong
performance as well, scoring a season-high 10
points, while pulling down seven rebounds.
"This was an improvement over our game last night
[against Florida International]," UNF head coach
Mary Tappmeyer said. "We won the battle on the
scoreboard and we out-rebounded them in the
second half. We can take a positive from that."
UNF outscored the Wildcats 29-27 in the second half
and outrebounded Villanova 21-13 in the frame.
Three Wildcats (3-3) finished the game in double
figures, led by Jackie Adamshick who scored a game-
high 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field and
pulled down 11 rebounds. Lisa Karcic also finished
with a double-double, scoring 15 points to go along
with 10 rebounds.
Villanova closed the opening half on an 11-0 run and
maintained its advantage throughout the second
half. After not scoring for almost five minutes to end
the opening half, UNF finished strong in the second
half, scoring 10 of the game's final 12 points. Sabrina Schmitt helped lead that charge off the bench with
four points in the final two minutes of play.
The Lady Ospreys fell behind early, trailing 6-2,
before Antoinette Reames capped a 4-0 run with a
basket that tied the game 6-6. UNF cut an 18-point
deficit to 10 with an 8-0 run, thanks to a pair of
blocks and back-to-back 3-pointers. Villanova,
however, countered with an 11-0 run, holding UNF
scoreless for the final 4:56 of the half.
Guldager led the Lady Ospreys with seven points in
the opening half, but didn't receive a lot of offensive
help from her teammates, as UNF trailed 39-18 at the
break.
UNF collected five blocks in the contest and turned
the ball over 10 times, compared to seven Villanova
turnovers.
Shandrea Moore finished the game with seven
rebounds, tying Guldager for the team high. She also
added a steal and an assist to her totals and
averaged 11 points in the tournament.
UNF is back in action next week when it opens
conference play in Nashville. UNF will take on
defending A-Sun champion Belmont on Thursday at
6:15 p.m. EST, before traveling across town to play
Lipscomb on Saturday at 3 p.m. EST.
