JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - University of North Florida guard Tamara Hubbard scored a career high 23 points to help lead the Lady Ospreys to a 56-45 victory over Atlantic Sun Conference rival Kennesaw State on Saturday at UNF Arena.
Hubbard, a Jacksonville native, hit 8-of-10 shots from the field and 4-of-4 shots beyond the 3-pointr arc to give UNF (4-8, 2-2 A-Sun) its second win in three games.
"I was feeling it today," Hubbard said. "I've been working on some things in practice and today those things seemed to come together."
Hubbard missed tying her previous career high, 18, by one point in Thursday's game against East Tennessee State, but made up for it on Saturday.
KSU (2-8, 2-3 A-Sun) was without the services of leading scorer and rebounder Shavonder Clarke in the contest, and missed her 22 point a game average. The Lady Owls shot 28.6 percent from the field and were out-rebounded 44-29.
Kennesaw State came out of the gates quick, grabbing an early seven-point lead. UNF turned that 11-4 disadvantage into a 15-13 lead on a Jennifer Guldager jumper.
Hubbard helped UNF close out the half on a 23-7 run with a 3-pointer in the final 15 seconds of play.
UNF led 27-18 at the break, but watched that lead slip to three points when KSU's Ngoneh Gaye hit a foul shot to make it a 36-33 game. Gaye was one of two Lady Owls in double figures, scoring 10 points and finishing tied with Danielle Bates with a team high seven rebounds. Bates led the Lady Owls with 18 points. Six of her rebounds were on the offensive end.
"We were a little tentative in the second half," UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer said. "We got big production off the bench, which helped us keep our lead."
A lot of that production off the bench came from Guldager, who pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and scored six points.
Eight of Guldager's rebounds came in the second half, as UNF put together a 10-4 run to help keep Kennesaw State at bay and seal the win.
Jackie Beik continued to have an impressive offensive week for the Lady Ospreys, scoring 18 points and pulling down seven rebounds. IN UNF's three games this week, the senior averaged 19.3 points and 8.3 boards.
Beik nailed one of UNF's six 3-pointers. UNF was 6-of-15 from long range and 6-of-7 at the free throw line. KSU hit 5-of-28 3-point attempts.
KSU took better care of the basketball than UNF, turning it over only 11 times, compared to 24 for the Lady Ospreys.
UNF is back on the road next week when it travels to North Carolina to take on Campbell Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. and Gardner-Webb Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. Both games can be heard live on the web at www.unfospreys.com.
