BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The University of North Florida women's basketball team put together a strong first half of play at Campbell University on Thursday, but couldn't hold the momentum in a 60-49 loss in Buies Creek, N.C.
UNF (4-9, 2-3 A-Sun) led the Lady Camels (5-9, 4-2 A-Sun) by four at the break after putting together their second highest point output in a first half this season. Campbell, however, held the Lady Ospreys to 16 points in the second half to win by 11. Before Thursday's game, UNF had been averaging five points more in the second half than the first, and holding its opponents to three points less.
Jennifer Lodge scored nine of her 13 points in the second half for Campbell to match teammate Marlena Murphy's game high 13 points.
Jackie Beik scored in double figures for the sixth game in a row, leading UNF with 12 points. Tamara Hubbard and Jennifer Guldager followed her with eight points each.
Campbell dominated the boards, pulling down 44 rebounds, compared to 22 for the Lady Ospreys. UNF only pulled down nine in the second half after trailing that category 17-13 at the break.
UNF was able to fend off Campbell most of the second half, until Campbell tied it at 43-43 on a pair of Jennifer Lodge free throws. The Lady Ospreys took the advantage back on a Hubbard jumper with 10:05 to play, but would never lead again after CU tied the game at 45 and finally took the lead on a Letitia Dickson 3-pointer. That basket helped Campbell close the game on a 15-4 run.
The two teams battled back and forth in the opening half, with the lead changing hands eight times. The Lady Ospreys led 33-29 at the break thanks mainly to their play underneath. Beik led the Lady Ospreys at the half with six points, while Andrea Dill had five and Antoinette Reames four.
Neither team led by more than five points in the opening half, with UNF holding that advantage after Jennifer Bowen hit a baseline jumper with 4:40 to play. A Kayla Sheldon 3-pointer put UNF back up by five, making it a 33-28 contest. Lynisha Ochogu hit a free throw for Campbell with 1:02 left in the half to finish out the scoring in the opening frame.
Murphy and Amber Graham led all players with nine rebounds, while Adrienne Rieley followed them with eight for the Lady Camels. Bowen and Guldager led UNF with four rebounds apiece.
Campbell committed 26 turnovers on the night, compared to 19 for UNF.
The Lady Ospreys will continue their road swing through North Carolina on Saturday when they travel to Boiling Springs to take on Gardner-Webb at 2 p.m. Live coverage of the game can be heard at www.unfospreys.com.
