JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's basketball team went scoreless in the final seven minutes of the opening half and never fully recovered in an 80-59 loss to East Tennessee State on Thursday at UNF Arena.
In a game of runs, ETSU (8-3, 4-0 A-Sun) put together the biggest run of the game, outscoring the Lady Ospreys (3-8, 1-2 A-Sun) 22-5 over the final 12:09 of the first half to remain undefeated in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
"The last eight minutes of the first half cost us," UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer said. "When you dig that big of a hole, you have to fight to get back in the game. It's hard to keep up the intensity."
UNF kept fighting in the second half and pulled as close as 11 with 12:56 to play. ETSU had an answer for every Lady Osprey run, and answered UNF's charge with a 7-2 run that helped seal the win.
B.J. Banjo, who scored her 1,000th career point in the win, went toe-to-toe with UNF's Jackie Beik, finishing the game with 23 points, compared to Beik's 22. For the second-straight game, Beik finished one rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with a game high nine boards.
"When you are a senior you want it more. Jackie has been scoring well lately," Tappmeyer said. "She needs to be a mainstay in our offense."
Tamara Hubbard followed Beik with 18 points, but the Lady Ospreys didn't get enough help from the rest of the supporting cast.
Hubbard scored nine of UNF's first 12 points, then helped the Lady Ospreys take a 17-15 lead with a jumper just inside the 3-point line.
Beik scored the next five UNF points to give the Lady Ospreys a 21-18 advantage. UNF, however, scored only one point the rest of the half when Jennifer Guldager nailed a free throw at the 7:01 mark to make it a 25-22 contest. ETSU scored the next 12 points and led 37-22 at the break.
Guldager finished with seven points and tied Andrea Dill for second on the team with five rebounds. Dill led all players with four blocks.
ETSU won the battle of the boards 37-29.
The Lady Buccaneers began the second half on a 6-0 run and led by as many as 24 before the lady Ospreys went on a 13-0 run, thanks mainly to their defensive pressure and easy looks underneath the basket.
Beik led the Lady Ospreys with four steals, while Banjo had three for the Lady Bucs.
ETSU shot 50 percent from the field for the game and hit 15-of-17 free throws, while the lady Ospreys shot 40.7 percent and knocked down 10-of-13 from the charity stripe. The Lady Bucs made the biggest difference beyond the 3-point arc, hitting seven shots from long range, compared to one for UNF.
The Lady Ospreys will have little time to rest, as they return to the court on Saturday to face Kennesaw State at 2 p.m. Live coverage of the game can be heard in Jacksonville on WIOJ 1010-AM or on the World Wide Web at www.UNFOspreys.com.
