NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The University of North Florida women's basketball team held off a furious rally by Lipscomb University in a 54-52 win on Thursday at Allen Arena in Nashville, Tenn.
Karli Knudsen scored 16 points off the bench for the Lady Ospreys, knocking down three shots beyond the 3-point arc, while pulling down six rebounds for her best performance of the season. Jackie Beik chipped in 13 in the win, as UNF watched an 18-point lead evaporate in the final minutes of play.
UNF was able to hold off the charge, as the Lady Bisons made it a two-point difference with a Penny Jones basket at the final buzzer.
"They amped it up on the defensive end and we got a little conservative," UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer said. "The win was huge for us. Anytime that you can get a win on the road it's big."
The Lady Ospreys (7-10, 5-4 A-Sun) upped their winning streak to three with the victory and broke their seven-game losing streak on the road. Lipscomb (3-13, 2-7 A-Sun) lost its fifth game in a row and fell for the first time at home in conference play.
UNF owned a six-point lead at the half and eventually pushed that to double digits in the second half thanks to a 12-2 run that saw Beik score five points, three of which came from behind the arc. The Lady Ospreys upped their 45-29 advantage to 48-40 on an Antoinette Reames 3-point play.
Reames scored seven points off the bench and pulled down five rebounds.
Lipscomb turned it on beyond the arc and owned the boards in the last seven minutes of play to get back in the game. The Lady Bisons finished the game on a 16-2 run. Dana Carrigan and Catie Woods helped the Lady Bisons rally from the outside, as they combined for seven 3-pointers in the game. Carrigan led Lipscomb with 14 points, while Woods scored 11. Katie Beth Pate had a game-high five blocks to go along with 12 rebounds.
Lipscomb outrebounded UNF 51-43. Miriam McAlister had a game-high 13 rebounds, while Knudsen and Andrea Dill finished with six rebounds to lead UNF.
UNF used a 17-0 run in the first half to turn a 17-11 deficit into a 28-17 advantage. Knudsen sparked that run off the bench with three baskets from beyond the 3-point arc and 11 points overall in eight minutes of play.
Lipscomb controlled play underneath early, but as UNF found a way to muscle its way to a rebounding advantage and create turnovers, the offense started to come along as well.
The Lady Ospreys will continue their road swing through Nashville on Saturday when they travel to Belmont for a 1 p.m. EST contest . Live coverage of the game can be heard at www.unfospreys.com.
