JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's basketball team overcame a 13-point deficit to defeat Jacksonville University by 13, 64-51, Monday night at UNF Arena in the first meeting between the two-cross town rivals.
UNF trailed 25-12 with 7:25 to go in the opening half, but rallied to score 14 of the next 18 points and only trail by four at the break. UNF (3-7, 1-1 A-Sun) outscored JU (3-6, 0-2 A-Sun) 38-22 in the second half behind 14 points from Jackie Beik to wrap up its first ever win in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
"I was happy with the way our team battled back after being down by 13 points," UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer said. "After the first 10 minutes we settled down and played better."
JU's Sheena Carpenter led all players with 19 points, while Beik finished behind her with 18. She missed her second career double-double by one rebound, pulling down a game high nine rebounds, four of which came on the offensive end.
After the Dolphins jumped out to a 25-12 advantage, Tappmeyer put a smaller lineup on the floor, utilizing four guards to help spark the Lady Ospreys' rally at the end of the half.
Alana Mountfield started the run with a 3-pointer and finished it with a pair of free throws in the final 30 seconds of the half. In-between, Beik scored all four of her first-half points and Anna Haberlein nailed a three from the baseline for one of her two baskets on the night.
JU led 29-26 at the half, but fell behind for the first time when UNF began the second half on a 4-0 run.
An Andrea Dill 3-pointer from the top of the key gave UNF a 46-40 lead, but JU cut it to one after a Kelly Ford layup. The Dolphins would get no closer, as Beik answered with five-straight points and an assist to Dill that gave the Lady Ospreys a 53-45 advantage.
UNF continued to pound the ball in the paint in the second half, taking advantage of a Dolphin squad that had four starters in foul trouble with at least three fouls most of the second half.
Dill followed Beik in the scoring column for UNF, finishing the game with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field. Ashley Williams scored 12 for the Dolphins and tied Carpenter for a team high seven rebounds. She also collected all four of JU's blocks.
JU out-rebounded UNF 40-34.
UNF turned the ball over 17 times, but took better care of the ball in the second half, turning it over only seven times. The Lady Ospreys also had six of their seven steals in the second half.
"The win was huge for our confidence," Tappmeyer said. "We were a little down after the way we finished non-conference play."
UNF will remain at home this week and stay in conference play when it hosts East Tennessee State on Thursday at 7 p.m., followed by a matchup with Kennesaw State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
