JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The third time proved to be the charm for the University of North Florida women's soccer team as the Lady Ospreys scored their first Atlantic Sun Conference win on Sunday afternoon at UNF Soccer Stadium by downing rival East Tennessee State 2-1.
The win also snapped a three-game skid for UNF (3-4-1, 1-2-0 A-Sun) that included losses to conference foes Florida Atlantic and Kennesaw State.
After being held to just seven shots in its three losses, the UNF offense exploded on Sunday to tally 16 shots, including nine shots on goal. The Lady Ospreys defense also stiffened, holding the Buccaneers (3-6-0, 0-2-0 A-Sun) to just seven shots after surrendering 47 shots during the three-game skid.
Senior defender Kirsten Johannsen recorded the game-winning goal for UNF in the 77th minute of play when the Vero Beach, Fla., native made a run down the right side of the field past the East Tennessee State defense and placed the ball just past a diving Erin Bilyeu for the score. Junior midfielder Courtney Forson assisted on the goal.
The goal was the first of the season for Johannsen.
East Tennessee State junior forward Emily Fulcher opened up the scoring at the 8:15 mark of the match when the New Bern, N.C., native redirected a deflected corner kick past UNF's Rachael Howard to give the Buccaneers an early 1-0 lead.
East Tennessee State held onto the lead until the 37th minute of the match when UNF junior defender Lisa Potoka netted the ball from 30 yards out to record her first goal of the season and knot the game at a goal apiece.
Howard recorded the win for UNF to improve to 3-4-1 on the season. The St. Petersburg, Fla., native tallied four saves in 90 minutes in goal.
Bilyeu suffered the loss for the Buccaneers to fall to 1-3-0.
