SAVANNAH, Ga. - University of North Florida pitchers Tori Ahern and Kelli Pitts threw back-to-back two hitters, giving up only one run in a doubleheader sweep of Armstrong Atlantic State Wednesday in Savannah, Ga.
UNF (30-6, 11-3 PBC) won the opener 5-1 before taking the second contest 3-0 against the Lady Pirates (18-13, 4-8 PBC).
"We got two great pitching performances and some timely hitting today," UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "Today's performance was much better than our last outing against Georgia College & State. It was nice to see us rebound from that."
Kelli Rutenbar led the UNF offense with four hits on the day to go along with a run and an RBI. She finished the opening game 3-for-3, moving up in the order from the cleanup spot to the No. 3 position.
UNF took advantage of three wild pitches and a bases-loaded walk that led to runs in the opening game.
Christina Evans scored the first run of the game for the Lady Ospreys in the third, sliding underneath a tag applied AASU pitcher Whitney Propes (5-5), who was covering home after sailing a pitch to the backstop.
North Florida broke the game open with three runs in the fifth, taking advantage of four Propes walks. Katie Field drove home one run with a walk, before Gwen Williams completed the scoring with an RBI single to right that scored Laura Hanstein.
Ashley Parenteau gave UNF a 5-0 lead in the sixth, scoring on a wild pitch.
That was good enough for Ahern, who retired the first 10 batters she faced, having a hand in the first nine outs. Ahern (18-3) struck out seven of those batters and recorded assists on the other two outs.
Ahern needed only 55 pitches to record the win, striking out 11 and not allowing an earned run until Amanda Hunt drove home Carrie Broom with an RBI double.
Pitts (3-0) was equally effective in the second game, facing the minimum 21 batters in the 3-0 win. She allowed two hits but erased both of those base runners on double plays. Pitts did not allow a walk and struck out four.
Parenteau drove home the only run Pitts needed in the top of the third inning, brining in Dyann Busse with a single to center.
Parenteau led the Lady Ospreys in game two with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate that included a double.
Christina Evans reached on an error by AASU shortstop Deanna Beaty in the fifth, then came around to score on a Rutenbar single to left.
Randalyn Rogers finally completed the scoring with her first home run in a UNF uniform, driving a Heather Woods (5-5) pitch over the left field wall.
UNF will return home this weekend for a pair of PBC doubleheaders, hosting Augusta State on Friday at 1 p.m., before welcoming USC Upstate for Senior Day on Sunday at 1 p.m.
