PEMBROKE, N.C. - The University of North Florida softball team will head home from UNC Pembroke with a pair of Peach Belt Conference wins and seven victories in a row after sweeping a doubleheader from the Braves on Tuesday.
UNF closes out its six-day road trip with a 7-1 record after downing UNCP 2-1 and 9-1 at Brave Field.
"I'm impressed by our play on the road this season," UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "We won seven of eight games on this road trip and it's a great accomplishment for us in our efforts to make postseason play."
UNF improved its record to 11-3 on the road this season and 22-4 away from home, with neutral site games included in that record.
Tori Ahern and Kelli Pitts combined to give up two runs in the doubleheader, one earned, while Ashley Parenteau led the offense with three hits and three RBIs on the afternoon. Randalyn Rogers also had three RBIs to help the Lady Ospreys' offensive effort.
Ahern and Amanda McCorkle battled in the opener with neither pitcher surrendering a hit until the fourth inning.
Katie Field delivered the Lady Ospreys first hit of the day, driving a single to center. She moved to third when McCorkle threw away a ball that Rogers bunted to her. Parenteau brought both runners home with a single to center.
Ahern worked her way out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth, and then was forced to pitch around a two-out error in the bottom of the seventh that led a run. Pembroke cut the UNF lead in half when Brittany Berrier scored on an error by second baseman Gwen Williams. Ahern stranded two runners in scoring position and ended the game in the process when she coaxed Wendi Cochran to ground a ball to short, where Parenteau tagged Jenny White for the final out of the game.
Ahern (16-2) allowed four hits in the win, striking out five and walking three. She did not surrender an earned run.
McCorkle (12-6) also pitched a complete game, striking out five and walking three.
Parenteau, Field and Rutenbar collected UNF's three hits, while Ashli Kern had two of Pembroke's four hits.
The two teams traded runs in the first inning of game two to finish the frame tied 1-1.
UNF took a 4-1 lead two innings later after Kern threw a ball away trying to cut down Rutenbar at the plate. Meagan Hendrix and Parenteau both singled home runs to complete the scoring in the inning and chase Braves' starter Liz Hatcher from the game.
Rogers upped the UNF lead to 6-1 in the top of the fifth, driving home Laura Hanstein and Williams with a single up the middle. Rogers brought home another run with an RBI double to left center in the sixth, then scored on a Hendrix base hit to left.
Field closed out the scoring for UNF in the seventh with an RBI single that scored Dyann Busse.
Pitts (2-0) didn't surrender a run after the first inning, allowing seven hits and striking out five. The two wins against UNC Pembroke ended the Lady Ospreys six-day road trip. UNF finished the journey 7-1, winning seven in a row after losing its first game of the trip to Alabama Huntsville.
UNF will take a few days off before continuing PBC play on the road March 26 at Georgia College & State.
