FLORENCE, S.C. - The University of North Florida women's soccer team battled back from an early 0-3 deficit Aug. 27 to tie Carson-Newman college 3-3 in the Lady Ospreys' first regular season game.
The two teams met in the first match of the Francis Marion University tournament in Florence, S.C.
After allowing Carson-Newman (o-0-1) three goals in the first 23 minutes of play, the Lady Ospreys held their opponents scoreless through the rest of the game and two overtimes.
In the 55th minute, senior midfielder Diana Hemke gave UNF (0-0-1) some much needed hope, earning the team's first goal of the night. Assisted by junior defender Lauren Winn, Hemke blasted a shot from inside the box into the upper right corner of the net.
Fifteen minutes later, sophomore midfielder Judith Claessens continued the Lady Ospreys' comeback with a goal assisted by fellow sophomore midfielder Jessica Eriksen.
With only five minutes remaining in the match, Winn got her second assist of the night when she fed the ball to sophomore midfielder Courtney Forson, who fired a shot from the top of the box to score the tying goal. After two overtimes, the final score remained 3-3, giving both teams a tie in their first match of the season.
UNF will see action again Aug. 28 against Lees-McRae for the team's final match of the Francis Marion tournament. The Lady Ospreys' first home match will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 12 against Berry College.
