FLORENCE, S.C. - The University of North Florida women's soccer team hammered home five goals Aug. 29 to earn its first win of the season, shutting out Lees-McRae College.
The Lady Ospreys faced Lees-McRae in their final game of the Francis Marion tournament in Florence, S.C. The match, which was bumped up several hours to avoid Tropical Storm Gaston, was played in rain and high winds.
Senior midfielder Diana Hemke started UNF's 5-0 rally with a goal in the 25th minute, the first of two for her in the match. Hemke, assisted by sophomore defender Lisa Potoka, netted a shot from the top of the box. Hemke's second goal came in the second half, off a pass from sophomore midfielder Cari Chiscon, giving the Lady Ospreys their fourth score of the game.
Junior forward Ali Blochl and sophomore midfielder Courtney Forson also tallied goals for UNF in the match. Blochl scored at the 54:22 mark off an untouched corner kick. Forson's goal, assisted by sophomore forward Christine Brewer, came in the 68th minute and was the Lady Ospreys' last score of the game.
UNF also earned a score off an own goal, knocked in by a Lees-McRae defender in the 37th minute of play.
The Lady Ospreys' defense held Lees-McRae to only one shot in the match. UNF's freshman goalie Heather Gosslin recorded the shutout.
Hemke was named MVP of the Invitational and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Nicole Handy and Judith Claessens.
UNF hits the field next Sept. 3 in another road match, this time against Florida Tech. The Lady Ospreys' first home match is against Berry College at 2 p.m. Sept. 12.
