SAINT LEO, Fla. (Feb. 23, 2005) - The University of North Florida softball team didn't score a run in a pair of losses to Saint Leo on Wednesday in Saint Leo, Fla.
UNF lost the first game 1-0 in eight innings before dropping the second game 4-0. The Lady Ospreys left the University Softball Field with four total hits, mustering three in the first game and one in the second.
Saint Leo's Ashley Black drove home the only run of the game in the opener, bringing home Mindy Miltner with an RBI double on the first pitch she saw from Tori Ahern (4-2).
"It was a disappointing loss," Ahern said. "Unfortunately we didn't come on top, but we'll bounce back this weekend."
Ahern locked horns with Heather Gamlin and Katie Heintz (7-1) in a pitcher's duel, allowing only three hits, while striking out seven. She worked her way out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth, then stranded runners at third base in both the sixth and seventh innings.
The Lions finally scored in the eighth thanks to the international tiebreaker, which puts a runner on second to start each extra inning. UNF had the same opportunity in the top of the eighth, but left Ashley Parenteau at third to end the inning.
Parenteau collected two of UNF's three hits in the game, with Gwenn Williams also reaching on an infield single.
Along with Miltner, Denyve Duncan and Haley Mallory also collected hits for Saint Leo. Heintz received the win for the Lions, pitching two scoreless innings.
Saint Leo got all it needed in the second inning from its first two batters. Duncan led off the frame with an infield single, then advanced to third on throwing error by Alisha Phillips and a fielding error in right by Katie Field. Allison Flynn followed with a double that scored Duncan.
The Lions added two more unearned in the bottom of the fifth inning. Saint Leo finished the scoring in the bottom of the sixth, touching Jessica Sexton for a run.
Phillips (2-2) took the loss for the Lady Ospreys, while Heintz struck out 12 in the nightcap to earn the complete-game win.
