COCOA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 26, 2005) - The University of North Florida softball team brought its hitting shoes to Cocoa Beach, Fla., Saturday in a pair of wins against Felician University.
After not scoring a run in 15 innings of play against Saint Leo Wednesday night, the Lady Ospreys defeated the Falcons 8-0 and 10-1, ending both games due to the mercy rule.
"It was a great offensive day for everybody top to bottom," UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "We did all of the little things today. The base running was good and we drove runners home."
UNF (8-4) wrapped up the first game in five innings on the strength of two Ashley Parenteau hits and a Tori Ahern (5-2) five hitter. Parenteau led the offense in the second game as well with two hits and a pair of runs.
Kelli Rutenbar got UNF on the board in game one in the top of the first inning, driving home Parenteau with an RBI single to left. Rutenbar made it 2-0 in the third, driving home Parenteau again with a sacrifice fly.
The Lady Ospreys began to pull away for good in the fourth, scoring three runs on RBI singles by Dyann Busse and Christina Evans and a Laura Hanstein sacrifice fly.
Gwen Williams finally completed the scoring in the fifth with a triple to left that scored two runs. She came in to score on the play after Felician (0-2) third baseman Danielle Green was called for obstructing Williams' path to third.
The Lady Ospreys put up four runs in the bottom of the third inning of game two to grab a 5-0 lead. They followed that up with three runs in the fourth before Randalyn Rogers ended the game with a base hit up the middle that gave UNF a 10-1 advantage in the bottom of the sixth.
Rutenbar finished 2-for-3 in the second game, while Kelli Richards was 1-for-3 with a run in her first start of the season. Evans scored three runs in the game and Parenteau contributed to the Lady Ospreys' rally in the third with a triple to right that brought home two runs.
"We played well today and hit the ball well, which we haven't been doing," Parenteau said. "I'm seeing the ball well and I was comfortable at the late today."
The offense was more than enough for Alisha Phillips (3-2), who gave up only run on three hits, while striking out seven.
UNF is back action tomorrow in Cocoa Beach when it takes on Point Park in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
