WINTER PARK, Fla. (Dec.4, 2004) - The University of North Florida women's basketball team fell for the first time this season and suffered its worst loss in two years, dropping a contest to Rollins 57-33 in Winter Park, Fla.
Rollins (6-2) upped its winning streak to five with the win, while handing UNF (5-1) its first defeat in six games.
"This was a tough stretch for us," UNF coach Mary Tappmeyer said. "We had to play four games in eight days. We just picked a bad day to play like we did."
After winning its first road contest of the season on Tuesday, UNF couldn't duplicate the comeback it posted against Florida Tech. The Lady Ospreys only led in the opening minutes of play and trailed by 16 at the half. UNF never got closer than 14 in the second half.
Tamara Hubbard led a UNF squad that didn't have a player in double figures. She finished the game with eight points on 3-of-7 shooting from the field. Kayla Sheldon followed her with seven points, while Karli Knudsen hit an early 3-pointer for UNF, but only went on to score two more the rest of the game. She was UNF's third-leading scorer with five points.
Randi Weiss had a game high 15 points off the bench for Rollins, earning four of those points from the free throw line. Nicole Warder followed her with 11 points, eight of those coming in the first half.
The Tars hit the opening basket of the game before Jackie Beik rattled home a 3-pointer for the Lady Ospreys. Rollins took the lead for good from there, opening up a 16-10 lead midway through the first half before closing the frame on a 15-4 run.
UNF hit the opening basket of the second half, but couldn't get any closer than 14 the rest of the game.
Rollins shot 43.1 percent from the field for the game, compared to only 22.6 percent shooting for the Lady Ospreys. UNF won the rebounding battle 37-36, as Brittney Davis pulled down seven boards. Jennifer Musgrove and Jennifer Catti each had five rebounds to lead Rollins.
UNF will get another crack at the Tars when they travel to UNF Arena for the Lady Osprey New Year's Classic Jan. 31.
The Lady Ospreys will take the next week off for finals before traveling to Shaw University Dec. 13. Coverage of that game can be heard on the web at www.unf.edu/sports and locally in Jacksonville on 1010-AM WIOJ.
