TAMPA, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's basketball team couldn't cool off a hot-shooting Jessica Dickson, as she scored 35 points to help lead South Florida to an 87-49 victory over UNF Wednesday at the Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla.
Dickson hit 14-of-23 shots from the field and three shots beyond the 3-point arc to help USF (10-2) defeat the Lady Ospreys (2-7) in the first meeting between the Florida schools.
Jackie Beik led UNF with 14 points, while Jennifer Bowen scored a career high 11 points and contributed seven rebounds to go along with three assists in the loss. The game was the second in a row that Beik finished in double figures, after she scored 10 at Indiana.
UNF was able to hang with the Bulls early, trailing 15-12 with 14:48 to play in the opening half. Beik gave UNF eight of those points, hitting her first two 3-point attempts and adding a layup to the mix as well.
USF rallied from there and scored the next 20 points of the game to increase a lead they would never relinquish. The Bulls led 54-23 at the half, shooting 64.7 percent from the field. Dixon led the way with 28 points and UNF finished the half with 20 turnovers.
The Lady Ospreys took better care of the ball in the second half, finishing the game with 27 turnovers. UNF held USF to 33 points in the frame. Bowen led the Lady Ospreys in the second half with 11 points. North Florida finished the game on a 10-7 run, capped off by an Anna Haberlein jumper.
UNF won the battle on the boards, out-rebounding USF 39-33. UNF pulled down 13 offensive rebounds, compared to 10 for the Bulls. The Lady Ospreys had five steals, while USF finished with 22.
USF also blocked eight shots, with Antoinette Reames blocking UNF's only shot on the night.
The Lady Ospreys will return to action on Monday when they square off with cross-town rival Jacksonville University at UNF Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and all of the action can be heard on the web at www.unfospreys.com. The JU game is the first of three home contests next week, as A-Sun leader East Tennessee State will be in town on Jan. 5, as well as Kennesaw State on Jan. 7.
