BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Dec. 20, 2005) - The University of North Florida women's basketball team recovered from a tough first half of basketball to hang with Indiana in the second half of a 68-46 loss in Bloomington, Ind.
UNF (2-6) outscored Indiana (5-6) 36-28 in the second half and only turned the ball over three times after giving it away 17 times in the opening half.
"I asked the team to come out and win the second half and they did that," UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer said. "The difference was 17 turnovers in the first half and only three in the second. We did a good job defensively in the half as well."
UNF created 10 turnovers in the second half and held Indiana to 36 percent shooting from the field.
Tamara Hubbard led the attack for the Lady Ospreys, scoring 15 points, 13 of which came in the second frame. She finished the night 3-of-4 beyond the 3-point arc and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Jackie Beik also finished the game in double figures, scoring 10 points.
Most of UNF's second-half damage came without Kayla Sheldon, who gave way to freshman Jennifer Bowen after seeing 10 minutes of action in the half. Bowen finished the game with four points, three rebounds and a steal that led to an easy basket.
Antoinette Reames also came off the bench to score six points, pull down six rebounds (four offensive) and block two shots.
After putting forth its lowest point total in a half to open the game (UNF trailed 40-10 at the break), the Lady Ospreys came out looking like a different team in the second half, going on a 4-0 run and forcing a turnover within the first two minutes of play.
UNF cut the lead to 21 on a Karli Knudsen lay up with 2:38 to play, pulling the Lady Ospreys as close as they would get in the second half.
Three Hoosiers scored in double figures, led by Cyndi Valentin, who finished the game with 25 points. Jenny DeMuth followed her with 12 points, while Angela Hawkins scored 10 points and had a game high seven rebounds.
Indiana out-rebounded UNF 33-27, pulling down 12 offensive boards, compared to 11 for UNF. The Lady Ospreys only allowed two offensive rebounds in the second half.
UNF returns to action on Dec. 28 when it travels to South Florida for a 4 p.m. tipoff. Live coverage of the game can be heard at www.unfospreys.com.
