JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's soccer team used an offensive explosion and stingy defense to power its way to a 7-0 win over Atlantic Sun Conference rival Lipscomb on Friday at UNF Soccer Stadium.
The win extends UNF's winning streak to three matches, while extending the squad's conference-win streak to four matches.
The Lady Ospreys (6-5-1, 4-2-0 A-Sun) tallied a season-high 28 shots, including 15 shots on goal, while holding the Bisons (0-13-1, 0-6-0 A-Sun) to just one shot. UNF recorded double-digit shots in both periods, racking up 18 of their shots in the final 45 minutes of play.
UNF's previous high in shots was 16 and came in a 2-1 win over East Tennessee State on Sept. 24.
"The girls played well," Munch said. "They finished extremely well. We were able to score some goals that you normally only see in fantasy soccer, so that was nice. It was also nice to be able to get everyone that was dressed out some quality minutes and let them have an impact on the match. It was a good win for our program."
UNF freshman forward Elizabeth Gowan opened the assault at the 21:33 mark of the match, when the Palm City, Fla., native used the heel of her foot to redirect a pass through the legs of Lipscomb goalkeeper Bethany Copeland for the game winner. Freshman Grace Weatherford and sophomore Jessica Jowers assisted on the goal.
Senior midfielder Tessa Heer scored her second goal of the season during the 30th minute of play when she netted the ball from 30 yards out to give the Lady Ospreys a 2-0 lead heading into the halftime intermission. Gowan assisted on the goal.
The UNF offense started up in the second period right where it left at the end of the first with three goals in an 11-minute span. Senior Ali Blochl notched her second goal of the season at the 54:51 mark, while Jowers and junior Courtney Forson added goals in the 65th minute and 67th minute, respectively. Jowers and senior Jess Smith assisted on Forson's goal.
The Lady Ospreys received a little help from the Bisons in the 77th minute of play when a ball played by Lipscomb was deflected off another Bison and past Copeland to give UNF a 6-0 lead.
Sophomore forward Lisa Weber added the final goal of the match in the 80th minute of play when she converted an Amanda Wallace pass into a 7-0 UNF lead. Freshman Alex Billeter also assisted on the goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Rachael Howard earned the win for the Lady Ospreys. Howard tallied one save in 68 minutes in goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Gosselin did not face a shot in 22 minutes in goal.
UNF will be back in action on Sunday for a showdown with Belmont. That match is set to begin at 1 p.m. at UNF Soccer Stadium.
