TALLAHASSEE, Fla.(Oct. 15, 2004)- The University of North Florida women's swimming and diving team was defeated in two of its three events Friday, losing to Florida State University and Tulane University. The Lady Ospreys victory came against Florida A & M University.
UNF beat FAMU 248-17, then lost to FSU 234-63. UNF closed out its day with a 217-76 loss to Tulane.
Head coach Beth Harrell said, "The team swam really well. It is obvious who trained over the summer, and who did not. It was good to start out the season with great competition, as it helps the team get focused on what they need to improve on. I felt our team unity was better than ever."
Senior Shawna Bothwell finished with two top-five finishes, coming in 3rd in the 200-yard backstroke, and finishing 5th in the 200-yard freestyle. Sophomores Julieann Watson and Amanda Rutherford, along with freshmen Savannah Codd and Krysten Nemecek each finished in the top five in their respective races.
Harrell was impressed with how the new members of the team performed. "The newcomers did a good job stepping up. They showed a lot of potential to greatly impact the team in the future."
North Florida's next meet is on Oct. 23, as it travels to take on Western Kentucky, Florida Atlantic University and Florida International University at Pembroke Pines High School in Pembroke Pines, Fla.
