JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team will welcome five newcomers to the program beginning in the fall of 2013, as announced by Head Coach Adam Schaechterle.
A quartet of international players will join fall signee and Gainesville, Fla. native Zach Goldberg next season, after the Ospreys graduated five players from this year's 15-8 squad that went undefeated in Atlantic Sun Conference play to take home its first-ever outright regular season conference championship.
Goldberg, who won the Florida Class 3A individual title this season, is rated as a four-star recruit by TennisRecruiting.net. The site also listed the senior as a top-100 prospect in their national rankings earlier this year. Goldberg signed with UNF during the fall signing period, saying that he “really liked everything about the tennis program-the coaches, the team and the tennis complex. I was very impressed by Coach Schaechterle and his ambitious goals for the tennis program.”
“We love Zach's potential,” Coach Schaechterle said. “He's had a great spring that culminated in a state championship and he will bring that momentum into his college career.”
Caio Gomes, a native of Cuiaba, Brazil, comes to the Ospreys by way of a standout pair of seasons at Laredo Community College in St. Laredo, Texas. Laredo CC has captured seven of the last eight Division I Junior College Men's Tennis Championships, having won six straight from 2005-2010 before capturing the title again in 2012. Gomes has played in the No. 1 singles spot for Laredo for much of the 2013 season and says that “the opportunity to play in such a good program and get a degree from UNF is very exciting.”
“Winning a national championship last season at Laredo showed Caio's ability to perform under pressure,” Schaechterle said. “This season, he's been a team leader at the No. 1 position and has compiled a number of victories against Division I opponents. With so many newcomers on next year's team, we're excited about his maturity and experience.”
Fabian Pronnet hails from Bad Endorf, Germany and will join UNF after taking a year off following his high school graduation. In 2011, Pronnet notched wins over multiple opponents with ATP rankings. He was also a 10-time regional champion in Germany in his age group. Pronnet says he is looking forward to “being on a team that practices with professional goals for the first time. I want to take my tennis to a higher level than it has ever been.”
“Fabian flew under the radar a little because he's older than most freshmen,” Schaechterle said. “We really like his scrappy, competitive style of play and we can't wait to get him on campus and training with us.”
Yannick Zuern, a native of Stuttgart, Germany, is ranked in the U18 top 10 in his home country and, at one point in his career, was ranked #1515 by the ATP in singles play. Since the beginning of 2013, Zuern has knocked off a trio of ATP-ranked opponents, including a straight-set, 6-2, 6-4 win over No. 867 Philip Davydenko. Zuern says that he “chose UNF for the intense practices, the solid education and the support system.” He added that “I'm excited to improve my tennis and earn my diploma.”
“Yannick is another guy with aspirations to play at the professional level,” Schaechterle said. “He's very committed and focused and he has the talent to make an immediate impact on the top half of our lineup.”
Jack Findel-Hawkins rounds out the 2013 signing class, hailing from Exmouth, Great Britain. Findel-Hawkins is very highly-regarded and currently sits at No. 1298 in the ATP singles rankings. This past year, he has spent much of his time holding the No. 1 ranking among Great Britain's U18 players. Findel-Hawkins has numerous wins over ATP-ranked players this year, including a 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 win over No. 674 Richard Gabb, a 7-5, 6-3 win over No. 660 Bastian Trinker and a 6-0, 6-1 romp over Neil Pauffley, No. 471 in the ATP rankings.
Findel-Hawkins chose UNF “because I felt a strong connection with the coaching staff and we shared the same ideas with how to go about helping me pursue my dream of becoming a professional tennis player.” Among his goals at UNF are “to keep improving my tennis towards the men's professional game and to help UNF achieve titles and wins that they have never achieved before.”
“Jack is one of the top recruits in the country,” Coach Schaechterle said. “We love his passion to improve his game and his potential to develop throughout his career. He's going to make an immediate impact on our program.”
The five newcomers will join a UNF squad that is looking to replace five seniors from the 2012-13 campaign. This season is not quite over for the Ospreys, as senior Moritz Buerchner and sophomore Norbert Nemcsek will be competing in the doubles portion of the 2013 NCAA Individual Championship on May 22-27 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Illinois. Buerchner and Nemcsek are the first UNF tennis players to ever earn an invite to the event.
