MACON, Ga. – Three University of North Florida men's tennis players received All-Atlantic Sun honors as voted on by the conference's head coaches, the Atlantic Sun announced on Thursday. Moritz Buerchner and Daniel Sotomarino were named First Team All-A-Sun for singles, while Norbert Nemcsek was selected to the All-Freshman Team. Sotomarino and Nemcsek also received Second-Team All-Conference for doubles.
It is Buerchner's third-straight First-Team All-Atlantic Sun honor and is the second-straight year in which he was a unanimous selection. Buerchner has compiled a 16-5 overall mark and 6-1 in the A-Sun at No. 1 singles this spring. He was undefeated in singles for most of the month of March, posting a nine-match winning streak that included five three-set victories. Earlier in the spring, Buerchner defeated then-No. 62 Nicholas Sayer 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, helping UNF to upset then-No. 71 Radford. As a result, he earned the first A-Sun Player of the Week honor for the 2012 season.
This is Sotomarino's first-ever First-Team All-A-Sun honor and his third Second-Team All-Conference doubles recognition. He's been a three-time A-Sun Player of the Week selection this year, earning the award in back-to-back weeks on Apr. 4 and Apr. 11. He clinched the match-winning points against then-No. 74 Stetson and Belmont, helping UNF to an 8-1 conference record in 2012. He's won four of his last five singles matches, which includes three three-set wins, and enters this weekend's A-Sun Championships with a 12-7 mark this spring.
With Nemcsek earning All-Freshman honors, it is the fourth-straight year in which an Osprey has landed on the All-Freshman Team. Nemcsek has played primarily at No. 3 singles throughout the conference portion of the schedule, putting together a three-match winning streak Mar. 21-29. He went 3-3 in singles against conference opponents.
Sotomarino and Nemcsek put together one of the conference's top doubles combinations, posting a 17-4 overall record and 7-1 in the conference. The duo has won their last eight matches – all on the No. 1 court – and started with an 8-6 win over ETSU's Sander Gille and Robin Asker. Sotomarino and Nemcsek have gone 12-3 at No. 1 doubles and 5-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Also announced on Thursday was the All-Academic Team. Buerchner, who is majoring in Finance, was among the eight players listed to the team. It is the third year in which he's earned All-Academic honors. Earlier this week, Buerchner was picked as UNF's male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
UNF, who is ranked No. 62 nationally, returns to action this weekend at the Atlantic Sun Men's Tennis Championships. The Ospreys are seeded second in the tournament and earned a first-round bye. UNF begins play in the tournament's semifinals on Saturday at 11 a.m., and will face the winner of Friday's No. 3 Stetson/No. 6 Florida Gulf Coast match.
