MACON, Ga. – For the third time this season and the second-straight week, No. 58 University of North Florida men's tennis' Daniel Sotomarino was selected as the Atlantic Sun's Men's Tennis Player of the Week. The award was announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
Sotomarino was undefeated last week as UNF picked up a pair of Atlantic Sun wins in order to secure a spot in next week's Atlantic Sun Men's Tennis Championships. He recorded the match-winning point in UNF's 4-3 win against Belmont, marking the second-consecutive match in which he's gotten the match clinching point for the Ospreys.
The Lima, Peru-native started last week with an 8-5 win with Norbert Nemcsek at No. 1 doubles over Belmont's Renaot Antun and Rafael Matos. Sotomarino then hung on for a thrilling 6-3, 7-6 (5) win against Belmont's Henrique Norbiato at No. 2 singles. Sotomarino then finished the week with an 8-1 No. 1 doubles win with Nemcsek against Lipscomb's Oliver Strecker and Miguel Cortez.
Sotomarino is the first men's player to receive A-Sun Player of the Week honors in consecutive weeks since USC Upstate's Javier Tori did so in the 2010 season on Mar. 17 and Mar. 24. He is only one of two players this season to earn Player of the Week multiple times with ETSU's Sander Gille being the only other player. In addition to this week, Sotomarino was the A-Sun's Player of the Week on Feb. 22 and Apr. 4.
Sotomarino and his teammates conclude the regular season this weekend on the road in Georgia. The Ospreys begin the road trip with a Friday match at Kennesaw State at 4 p.m.
