JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – No. 74 University of North Florida upended No. 71 Radford 5-2 in the Ospreys' home opening match on Monday at the UNF Tennis Center.
UNF (1-1) took an early 1-0 lead in the match by taking the doubles point. After Radford (0-1) took No. 1 doubles and UNF won at No.3, the point came down to the No. 2 doubles showdown between UNF's Daniel Sotomarino and Norbert Nemscek and Radford's Igor Ogrizek and Stijn Meulemans. With Ogrizek and Meulemans up 7-6, Sotomarino and Nemscek won two-straight critical points to take an 8-7 lead. Ogrizek and Meulemans came up with the next point and forced a tie-breaker. Sotomarino and Nemscek captured the tie-breaker to complete their comeback and in order to win 9-8 (5).
In singles play, the Ospreys won four of the six singles matches. At No. 1, Moritz Buerchner upset No. 62 Nicholas Sayer 6-3, 6-3. Sotomarino posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ogrizek at No. 2, while Nemscek also won 6-2, 6-2 in his match against Joe Mills. Julien Belair rounded out the Ospreys' singles wins with a 7-5, 6-3 match over Meulemans.
Radford took No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Thomas Dehaen defeated Leonardo Nahar 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5. Patrick O'Keefe defeated Graham Edgar 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.
UNF returns to action in 12 days when the Ospreys travel to Georgia Southern. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
