The Ospreys men’s tennis team defeated Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's tennis team swept a doubleheader on Sunday, Jan. 31, at the UNF Tennis Complex. The Ospreys began the day with a 4-2 victory over Florida A&M, before taking down Bethune-Cookman, 5-2, in the afternoon session.
In the first match of the day, North Florida played just five singles matches because the Ospreys had an incomplete lineup and could not field a player at court No. 6, putting them behind 1-0. FAMU took an early 2-0 lead as David Jackson defeated UNF's Leonardo Nahar, 6-1, 6-1.
The Florida A&M advantage did not last long as the Ospreys proceeded to win the next four matches and seal the victory.
Taylor Albretch downed Michael Moore, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 2 singles position. No. 3 singles saw Hleb Maslau defeating Marc Atkinson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. The Ospreys picked up a win at No. 4 singles as Graham Edgar defeated Maurice Wamukowa, 6-2, 6-4.
The deciding match came at No. 5 singles as UNF's Kurt Gattiker needed a tiebreaker in the first set to take the lead on Temura Asafu-Adjaye, 7-6 (1). He finished the match with an exciting 6-4 victory to secure the win for North Florida.
In the afternoon match, the Ospreys picked up four singles victories and won the doubles point. UNF won both doubles matches they played to pick up the doubles point, but with no player to play at No. 6 singles, the match was knotted at 1-1.
Like the first match of the day, the Wildcats were able to pick up a victory at the No. 1 position. Also like the morning match, North Florida won each of the next singles matches to sweep the doubleheader.
Albretch defeated Emil Vassilev in straight sets at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-4, while Maslau made short work of BC's No. 3 player, Greg Streat, 6-1, 6-4. At No. 4 singles, Edgar downed Cristian Cruz, 6-3, 6-3, and Gattiker won against Kip Jackson, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 5 singles.
North Florida men's tennis returns to action next weekend as the Ospreys take on South CarolinaState on Saturday, Feb. 6, and Florida Atlantic on Sunday, Feb. 7, at the UNF Tennis complex. The match against the Bulldogs is slated for 2 p.m., while the match against the Owls will be played at 10 a.m.
