Academic Certification:
A student-athlete who enrolls in a member institution as an entering freshman with no previous full-time college attendance must meet certain academic requirements, as outlined in the Eligibility Standards Quick Reference Sheet, to be considered a qualifier and thus be eligible for financial aid, practice and competition during the first academic year in residence .

This Initial Eligibility Worksheet is provided to assist you in monitoring your progress in meeting NCAA initial-eligibility standards. The NCAA Eligibility Center will determine your academic status after you graduate. Remember to check your high school's List of NCAA Courses for the classes you have taken.


Amateurism Certification:
Amateurism Frequently Asked Questions

According to NCAA Bylaw 12.1.2, an individual loses amateur status and thus shall not be eligible for intercollegiate competition in a particular sport if the individual:
  • Uses his or her athletic skill (directly or indirectly) for pay in any form in that sport;
  • Accepts a promise of pay even if such pay is to be received following completion of intercollegiate athletics participation;
  • Signs a contract or commitment of any kind to play professional athletics, regardless of its legal enforceability or any consideration received, except as permitted in Bylaw 12.2.5.1;
  • Receives, directly or indirectly, a salary, reimbursement of expenses or any other form of financial assistance from a professional sports organization based on athletics skill or participation, except as permitted by NCAA rules and regulations;
  • Competes on any professional athletics team per Bylaw 12.02.4, even if no pay or remuneration for expenses was received, except as permitted in Bylaw 12.02.12;
  • After initial full-time collegiate enrollment, enters into a professional draft see (Bylaw 12.2.4)
  • Enters into an agreement with an agent.


Transfer Information:
How do you know if you're a transfer student-athlete?
  • Have you ever been enrolled full-time at a two-year or four-year school in a regular academic term? (Summer does not count)
  • Have you ever reported for practice with the regular squad?
  • Have you ever practiced or played while you were enrolled part-time?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you are a transfer student-athlete.

If you have never previously enrolled as a full-time student in a university, you must meet minimum academic standards in order to be eligible for practice, competition and athletics financial aid your first year. The minimum required standards will vary depending on the country. These standards are outlined in the NCAA International Guide.

If you are currently enrolled (or have previously been enrolled) as a full-time student at a university in a foreign country, you will be considered a transfer student-athlete after enrolling at an NCAA university. Please see the specific transfer guides above.
