
Alonya Waldon Posts Career-High 27 Points, Women's Basketball Falls At Stetson

DELAND, Fla. – North Florida Women's Basketball dropped a tight game on the road to Stetson, 73-68, in DeLand, Fla., Thursday evening.
Junior guard Alonya Waldon led all scorers with a career-high 27 points on 7-16 from the field, 3-7 from three and 10-11 from the free throw line in 31 minutes off the bench.
For Waldon, it marked her third game this season and fourth career game with at least 20 points, in addition to her eighth ASUN game, 13th game this season and 24th career game in double figures.
Freshman forward Dezuray McGill would finish with 17 points, a career-best nine rebounds and two steals on 7-12 from the field and 3-3 from the free throw line in 22 minutes. It marked her seventh ASUN contest and 11th season contest with at least ten points.
Sophomore guard Jamisyn Stinson collected 13 points on 5-11 from the floor and 3-7 from three in 37 minutes. She has posted 10+ points in eight of the last 10 contests.
Stinson knocked down her 50th three of the season with 18 seconds remaining in the contest. It's her second-straight season with 50 or more threes.
North Florida jumped out to an early 6-5 lead over Stetson with McGill accounting for six of the Ospreys' first 10 points. The Hatters responded with a 10-0 run of their own to take a 15-6 advantage at the 3:30 mark of the first quarter. North Florida would narrow the margin to six, 18-12, heading into the second quarter.
A three from junior guard Waldon would make it a one possession contest shortly after the start of the second quarter. Waldon would knock down a free throw to even the contest, 20-20, at the 8:21 mark of the second quarter. Stetson would regain the lead and bring a 36-27 lead into the halftime break.
In the first half of play, Waldon led the Ospreys offensively with 13 points on 3-6 from the field, 2-3 from three and 5-6 from the free throw line.Â
A 7-0 Osprey run capped off by a made three from junior guard Elle Blatchford would give North Florida a 40-39 lead and force a Hatter timeout at the 3:55 mark of the third quarter. Stetson answered back to force a UNF timeout and take a 50-45 lead at the 1:33 mark of the third. Stetson took a 52-48 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Stinson would knock down a deep three to make it a one-point game at the 7:24 mark of the fourth quarter. Stetson extended their lead to five, 60-55 at the final media timeout.Â
A Waldon three from the top of the key would narrow the Hatter lead to just three, 63-60, with 2:44 remaining in the game. Five-straight points from Stetson would extend their advantage. The Ospreys would get to within three after a Stinson trey with 18 seconds remaining but were unable to regain the lead.
North Florida returns home to UNF Arena for its final home contest of the season against Queens on Saturday, Feb. 21. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
