ATLANTA, Ga. - North Florida track & field added two more marks to the program record books in the men's 400mH and the men's 4x400m relay events at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Rey Hernandez had first try in the 400mH race and took down the record in his second season as an Osprey. An 11-year record was surpassed after clocking in 51.77 for fifth overall at Georgia Tech.
Hernandez returned with
Matthew Groves,
Mason Spearin and
Troy Williams for the 4x400m relay and knocked down another 11-year program mark. Their time of 3:11.96 was good for ninth overall, as the relay team now holds both indoor and outdoor school records for the men's 4x400m.
On the women's side
Nicole Shepherd impressed with a 1.74m mark in the high jump to share second overall at the meet.
Smilla Kolbe came back after her record-breaking run in the 1500m on Friday with a sub 54-second 400m run that placed her third, while
Ella Chandler placed eighth in the 800m with a time of 2:10.64.
PIGG POINTS
"Nicole [Shepherd] had a great meet. We know she is good and it was so nice to see the break-through today. She competed in a tough competition of 37 jumpers. She kept her poise and delivered big time. Rey [Hernandez] ran a great race. He has been building all year to get to this point. He is primed and there is more to come from him! Smilla [Kolbe] ripped a nice 400m. Coming off of the big 1500m last night, our hope was to run sub 54 [seconds]. She is strong and fast. Nice combo! Gabby [Johnson] executed a nice race today. She has been on a mission to break 55 [seconds] and we knew she could do it, so it is nice to have it in the books today. Men's 4x400m was a great way to close out this trip. The guys competed hard. It was exciting to see these four step up for each other and our team. I'm really proud of them."
