Baseball Snaps Skid, 13-6, Over Yale Behind Nichols’ Big Night

Cherokee Nichols Homers Twice, Drives In Five

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida baseball (2-3) snapped its three-game losing streak with a big midnight victory, 13-6, against Yale (0-1) to open the home weekend series on Friday evening at Harmon Stadium.

UNF's offense returned to form, as they scored 13 runs and had 10 base hits. Right fielder Cherokee Nichols was the star of the night, as he homered twice and had a go-ahead two-run double. The Ospreys would pick up their first victory since Opening Day.

Matthew Clements would open the scoring in the second with an RBI single. North Florida would expand their lead in the third on a Cherokee Nichols solo home run and a two-run single from Clements. Peter Holden walked six and allowed three runs, but did pickoff three runners at first base.

The Bulldogs would score three in the fourth to make it a close game. Tripp McKinley would add an RBI to his season total in the fifth, picking it up on a double to the gap. North Florida would have a tough sixth inning, allowing two runs to score and committing three errors. The Ospreys would have four total on the night, but the offense overshadowed the miscues.

Nichols would deliver again in the sixth, driving a double to the gap in right-center to give the Ospreys a seven to five lead. McKinley and Drew Leinenbach would each add an RBI in the inning as well. A solo home run by Yale third baseman Davis Hanson would keep the Bulldogs in the game.

Nichols would send another baseball over the fence in the seventh. His two-run home run would bring his RBI total to five. Tyler Gertesien stole home in the eighth and Alex Rodriguez plated another run to bring UNF's run total up to 13.

Jordan Wimpelberg pitched a solid four innings of relief to finish off the Bulldogs. Wimpelberg struck out a career high five batters, and picked up his first win of his career.
