DIAMOND PREVIEW: Florida International

4/18/2023 12:00:00 PM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida softball returns home after a successful road trip to play against in-state opponent Florida International in a midweek matinee on Wednesday, Apr. 19, at 2 p.m.

The Ospreys picked up their first true road wins of the year against North Alabama and finished the series with a tie due to time constraints on the final day of play. UNF looks to continue that momentum and pick up their first win against the Panthers since 2014.

All matchups will be broadcasted on SWOOPLife Live this week. Updates for each game will be made through live stats, as well as on Twitter at OspreySB.

WHAT TO KNOW

  • Ospreys hold a 4-3 record in midweek games this season with their only losses coming against No. 6 Florida State, No. 15 Florida and UCF.
  • They are also 7-4 against in-state opponents on the year, as FIU will be their eighth team faced from the state of Florida.
  • Picked up first road wins of 2023 in doubleheader against North Alabama this past weekend in Florence.
  • Also recorded their first tie in UNF D-I program history after the game reached its drop-dead time through 10 innings.
  • Shannon Glover picked up her eighth home run of the season to extend her lead on the team by five total.
  • She also has been dominating ASUN pitchers with a .354 average, 17 hits, 12 RBIs, five home runs and 33 total bases in 15 conference games played.
  • Chloe Culp also hit her first home run in conference play, as well as her first since playing Bethune-Cookman in February.
  • Savannah Channell had a three-hit, three-RBI day for the third time each as an Osprey during the series finale at UNA.
  • Mackenzie Woods has gone five straight games with a hit after only having one in ASUN play before this past weekend.
  • Izzy Kelly and Ashley Connor are both coming off complete-game performances during Saturday's pair of wins against the Lions.
  • Connor reached 80 total strikeouts with her two starts on the road, while Izzy Kelly earned her 10th win of the season.

OPPONENT NOTES

  • Florida International brings an 18-22 overall record and a 5-10 conference record in the C-USA to Jacksonville. Much like the Ospreys, they have struggled on the road this season with a 1-9 record in away games. They were swept in their most recent series against FAU, as UNF shut out the Owls in both games earlier in the year. The Panthers have four players batting over .300 with Ella Whitney leading the pack at .380 average. Ashton Lansdell leads the team in hits with 36 total, as well as home runs with five total. Isabella Perez has been the catalyst for RBIs on the squad with 20 total through 36 games played. Megan Kruger has the top ERA mark at 1.87 with a 6-4 record and 27 strikeouts. Sydney Birling has the most strikeouts on the team as well with 35 total, along with the most innings pitched at 77.0.
    • UNF trails the overall series against the Lions, 9-1, with the last meeting being a 10-0 defeat at Jacksonville, Fla., in 2015.
