DIAMOND PREVIEW: Jacksonville State

Softball Goes to Jacksonville State

3/31/2023 12:00:00 PM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida softball has its sights set on earning its first road win of the season, as the Ospreys resume conference play against Jacksonville State from Apr. 1-2 in Jacksonville, Ala.

The Ospreys came up short in a comeback attempt against UCF and look to find their footing against the Gamecocks, who are the only remaining team in the ASUN with an undefeated conference record. UNF has held teams to three runs or less in each of their last six games and will try to keep that trend going this weekend.

All matchups this upcoming weekend will be broadcasted on ESPN+. Updates for each game will be made through live stats, as well as on Twitter at OspreySB.

WHAT TO KNOW

  • Four of the last five matchups between the Gamecocks have been one-run games, all falling in JSU's favor.
  • Only the second time this season UNF has left the state of Florida with its ASUN opener against Central Arkansas being the first.
  • Grabbed a win against the Gamecocks last season in a 4-0 shutout on the back side of a doubleheader.
  • Shannon Glover remains the team leader for average (.367), hits (36), runs (22) and home runs (4).
  • She also is the only Osprey with more than three hits against conference opponents with seven total.
  • Kayla Harper is a perfect 18-for-18 in stolen bases, which is the most by a player in the ASUN on the year.
  • Harper also had the game-tying two-RBI-single against UCF with a full count in the seventh inning.
  • Chloe Culp has 11 doubles and 31 RBIs on the season as well, which also leads all players in the ASUN and is top-15 and top-50 in the nation respectively.
  • Gracie Hogie made the first start of her collegiate career against UCF and went 1-for-2 on Wednesday.
  • Ospreys depend on Ashley Connor and Izzy Kelly in the circle, as Connor holds a 1.64 ERA with 72 total strikeouts and Kelly has a 9-2 record in 16 appearances.
  • Connor also leads the ASUN in saves with five total, while also ranking top five in the nation.

OPPONENT NOTES

  • Jacksonville State enters the third weekend of ASUN play with a 20-9 overall record and an undefeated 6-0 mark in the conference. They also have a stellar 9-2 record at home and are riding a nine-game winning streak heading into the weekend. Their two series so far have been against North Alabama and Bellarmine, as they scored five runs or more in each of the six games, while also allowing only four runs or less. They have only allowed one run or less in seven of their past nine games during their winning streak as well. Lindsey Richardson has the best average on the team at .385, with Lauren Hunt not too far behind at .325. Richardson also leads the team with 30 hits and 26 RBIs. There are 11 different Gamecocks with a home run in 2023 with Linley Tubbs leading the way with five total. Jallyah Holmes is the ace for JSU with a 1.93 ERA, 92 strikeouts and a 9-3 record with eight complete games.
    • UNF trails the overall series against the Gamecocks, 4-2, with the last meeting being a 5-4 defeat in extra innings at Jacksonville, Ala., in 2022.
